Why Sorting is So Important
Ball State has a great recycling system in place. It's called a co-mingled system, meaning that all types of recyclables go into the same blue bag to be taken to the recycling dumpster. This makes it convenient for users to recycle. When Ball State custodians take the trash and recycling bags, they go to recyclable and non-recyclable dumpsters across east-central Indiana.
But here's the catch.
If a recycling load is contaminated with too much non-recyclable material, it is rejected and sent to the landfill! That's why it's up to us to sort responsibly. If we don't, we could be doing more harm than good!
How to Recycle
Use our handy guide below to sort your disposables. If you live in a residence hall, place your recyclables in the blue bags in each trash room. If you live off-campus, you can request blue recycling bags from the Muncie Sanitary District. Then simply fill the bag with recyclabes, place in your regular trash can, and have it picked up on trash day!
Also, be sure to utilize the many recycling barrels around campus and in our dining facilities.
